MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex

In a League of its Own

The City of West Des Moines built a unique partnership with the private sector to bring a one-of-its-kind sports facility to Central Iowa – The MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex. This project addresses the need for a regional, indoor sports facility that provides year-round access and opportunity for our growing youth sports programs such as hockey, soccer, and basketball. The 300,000 square foot RecPlex also features space for conventions & concerts, community & business meetings, corporate & private gatherings, as well as adaptive recreation. The RecPlex promises to enhance the quality of life for people of all ages and abilities.

With more than 66 acres of land, the RecPlex features three outdoor, synthetic turf fields. In addition to having access to wireless internet, the fields will have permanent lighting for night games. On-site parking for 1000 vehicles is included within the RecPlex site, as well as bike paths and pedestrian areas. The RecPlex is conveniently located within a mile of the I-35/I-80 corridor and is less than 15 minutes from Des Moines International Airport.

Countless upscale amenities – accommodations, restaurants and shopping –  are just five minutes away from the facility.

The Hy-Vee Fieldhouse features 150,000 square feet of recreational space including four basketball courts, three pickleball courts, and a full-sized synthetic turf field. Additionally, the Fieldhouse has an area for baseball, complete with four batting cages and a designated lane for pitching practice.  Fans can watch games on rollout bleachers courtside or enjoy the comfort of sitting at a table in the second-floor mezzanine.

A state-of-the-art sound system, scoreboards and wireless internet are also included within walls of the Hy-Vee Fieldhouse.

With ceiling height clearance of 56 feet and more than 70,000 square feet of open space, the GreenState Credit Union indoor turf field has space to accommodate a wide range of sports. From soccer to lacrosse, to football, baseball and softball, this section of the Hy-Vee Fieldhouse is sure to be in high demand with teams of all ages.

The Greg Abel Ice Arena, larger of the two arenas, will host ice sports and events in the winter and has bleacher seating capacity of 1500 people. In the summer months, the 20,000 square foot arena converts to a convention space with dry floor seating for 2400. It is the perfect space for concerts, conventions, trade shows and expos.

The Patty & Jim Cownie Family Ice Arena has bleacher seating for approximately 500 for ice sports and events. This arena, smaller of the two, will have ice up and running year-round for ice sports, figure-skating and public skating.

A variety of meeting, classroom and programming space is available at the RecPlex. The Kum & Go Multipurpose Rooms can accommodate large gatherings for up to 200 people, with the option to divide the space into smaller, more intimate areas.

The Overlook Room (seating for 130) and Community Room (seating for 60) can be used for smaller events such as bridal showers or birthday parties.

We are excited to announce an addition to the original RecPlex plans – a 3500 square foot Esports Center – for the fastest growing sport in the world! The Esports Center will feature 30 state-of-the-art, water-cooled computers, six consoles, lounge seating, along with LED lighting and a first-class sound system. This space will serve as a hub for the elite gamer, as well as those just learning the sport.

The Esports Center can also be used as a computer lab for numerous technology-related classes.

The 5000 square foot Des Moines University Physical Therapy Clinic will serve as the exclusive physical therapy and sports performance provider for the RecPlex. Located inside the RecPlex, and adjacent to the main Commons, the DMU Physical Therapy Clinic will provide sports performance and rehabilitation services not only to athletes at the facility, but also community members.  DMU Physical Therapy Clinic will also provide onsite services for tournaments and events at the RecPlex.

Enhancing Our Quality of Life

Behind the drive to create the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex is a steadfast commitment by local leaders to enhance the quality of life for all central Iowa residents. This first-of-its-kind complex greatly increases year-round access to sports programs for a growing youth community, contributing to a positive life-long impact in their lives. In addition to youth sports, the complex will also offer adult leagues, an outdoor playground and many other amenities.

Addressing a Need

An expanding list of partnerships from central Iowa’s largest youth/adult athletic organizations shows a commitment to fully utilize the facility. Current projections show over 1,080 participants per weeknight, and upwards of 5,000 per weekend day – making the complex immediately self-sufficient and sustainable. We anticipate additional usage by smaller conventions, trade shows and corporate gatherings.

Delivering Economic Benefits

Whether it’s for regional tournaments or an industry trade show, this venue will have the ability to draw visitors from all across our region. It will spur economic benefits to almost every local business category, from overnight accommodations to retail sales and restaurants.

Momentum for Our Community

The growth and population trends for central Iowa indicate a need for initiatives like this, especially when the momentum and enthusiasm are so high from the outset. Local leaders, community groups and private citizens have formed a public/private partnership that is dedicated to making the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex a reality. A clear plan of action combined with a long list of engaged partners means this first-of-its-kind venue is destined to be a jewel in our community.
